The Fives Beach Hotel Resort, Mexico

November 16 – 23, 2024

We decided a year ago to tack on a wedding anniversary trip to Mexico onto our trip to Toronto to see Taylor Swift.  It made sense at the time of booking since we have to fly through Toronto anyways.

Two days before our scheduled departure, I was on the verge of cancelling this trip.  In fact we even called the resort to see if we could get our money back because tropical storm Sara was forecasted to hit the area with heavy rainfall and wind.  But unfortunately we were past the time for getting any money back if we cancelled.  So away we go, storm be damned!

Saturday

We landed in Cancun just after 1 pm and by the time we stepped outside after collecting our luggage the sky was looking pretty dark.  We waited for our driver to arrive, which probably took until just after 2pm.  We loaded our luggage into the vehicle and off we went to our resort.  The Fives Resort is about a 40 minute drive from the Cancun airport.  About 10 minutes into our drive the rain started.  And it really started to pour!  By the time we arrived to the turn off to our resort, it was still raining pretty hard.  Our driver pulled over into the median and was waiting until it was clear to cross the highway from oncoming traffic.  The oncoming traffic was steady and so was the rain, and even though it didn’t seem like there was a break in the traffic our driver pulled out and the next thing I saw was a motorcycle coming straight at my door.  The impact was gut wrenching.  I can’t get the image out of my head.  I thought the motorcyclist had to be dead.  I looked out my window and I could see the bike on the highway.  I could see his sneakers lying further down the highway.  The next thing I see is a lady running out with an umbrella to the driver.  He gets up!  He walks to the side of the highway!  Thank God he isn’t dead and he can walk.  Our driver was outside dealing with the situation.  He called us another driver to come and take us the rest of the way to the resort.  By the time our new driver arrived (about 20 minutes) the rain had stopped and the transfer to the new vehicle went smoothly.  I hope the motorcyclist and the driver of our vehicle didn’t suffer terrible consequences from the accident.

By the time we arrived at the resort, we were feeling pretty frazzled by the accident.  I decided I just wanted to get us settled into our room and unpack, I didn’t want to go anywhere, I just needed to feel like we were settled.  Our room was really nice.  We had booked a penthouse with a rooftop terrace. The rain had stopped for a bit and the sun was peeking out.

Dinner tonight was at the sushi restaurant.  And after dinner we got a drink and watched the entertainment in the main plaza.

Sunday

We woke up to a torrential rain storm!  The rain would stop briefly and then start again.  We spent most of the day just lounging in our room and reading.  Tonights Dinner was at the Thai restaurant, which is always a favourite of ours.

Monday

The sun was out and we spent the day in the Prestige members pool area.  Our server Juli was amazing.  There was only one other couple in this pool area and it felt very relaxing!  Juli would drop off snacks for us and she was super attentive and lovely.

Monday night we booked a tequila and mescal tasting and a traditional Mexican cooking lesson at Casa de Rosa.  The tequila was pretty good.  I’d never had mescal before so that was something different – it was very smokey tasting.  Then we started our cooking lessons.  We made corn tortillas, salsas and salads.

Casa de Rosa

Tuesday

Another beautiful day and we spent the day at the Prestige members pool again.  And again there was just us and one other couple in this area.  Perfectly chill and relaxing.  At 3pm a saxophonist comes by and plays live music. It’s so chill and exactly the vibe I need.   They had free cooking lessons this morning too.  We ate, we drank, we played connect 4 by the pool.  We read, we swam.  It was lovely.  Dinner tonight was at the French Bistro

Wednesday

The rain came back and it rained all day.  It was a day we spent dodging the rain and reading and playing board games.  We had our Prestige members update over lunch at the new Fives Beachfront resort restaurant Santa Sirena.  The meal was amazing.  I had a lamb burger and Stephen had spaghetti carbonara.  We loved it!  We also had the Prestige members dinner tonight at the French Bistro restaurant.  The dinner wasn’t that great, there were hardly any members attending,  and the entertainment was contortionists, unicyclers and jugglers.  Contortionists make me queasy, so not exactly my cup of tea.

Thursday

The sun was out today but it wasn’t a hot day.  It was about 18 degrees.  We had a bali bed booked on the beach for the day.  They had an amazing bbq on the beach for lunch.  Tonight we had dinner at the Italian restaurant.

Friday

We had another day in a bali bed on the beach.   The sun was out but again only about 19 degrees.  We spent the day snuggled under some towels and reading.  Tonight we went to the sister property The Beachfront restaurant Santa Sirena for our anniversary dinner. They brought us a complimentary bottle of sparkling wine.  And the cocktails were AMAZING! We accidentally ordered multiple cocktails each.  Let’s just say something was lost in translation.  And I’m not that sorry though because the drinks were delicious and we enjoyed them!  One of my cocktails was called Drupa, it had tequila, cucumber, lemon citrusoleo and tonic water.  The other cocktail was a special personailized tequila based cocktail that the mixologist made for me tableside.  I have no idea what else was in it but it was delicious!

For our starters we shared to roasted duck on brioche and a lima bean hummus.  My main was a filet mignon and Stephen had sea bass.  For dessert i ordered pavlova with a pineapple compote and coconut icecream and Stephen ordered the Chocolate fudge

Saturday

We depart for the airport at 11 so we had time to have a leisurely breakfast. I loved starting my day with a coffee and chocolate croissant!

And that’s a wrap for Mexico 2024! Bye monkeys!

    1. Best tequila cocktails I’ve ever tasted! Sure would be nice to be back there today instead of the -27 degree windchill here!

The accident still haunts me. I hope it turned out ok for everyone involved ❤
